Reaching new heights with a circular solution for the climbing sector

Did you know that landing mats, used in climbing, only last for several years? After their use, they’re processed through local waste disposal. Because of their non-recyclability, these mats are ultimately burnt, wasting valuable resources and resulting in unnecessary CO2 emissions. As the climbing sport sector continues to grow, a circular solution became essential.

Together with the initiator, Rijkswaterstaat (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management) and Peter Kok (De Klimmuur & Beest Boulders), the owner of several climbing venues throughout the Netherlands, we were determined to solve this challenge.

Unraveling the lifecycle of landing mats

We began by conducting desk research on the topic of landing mats. We examined their production process, the materials used, and the structure of the supply chain. Alongside various stakeholders, we started to unravel the lifecycle of these mats. Through a combination of desk research and in-depth interviews with recyclers, upcyclers, and industry experts, we pieced together ways to extend the mats’ lifespan and find new uses for their components.

Foam and PVC fabric reimagined

One critical component, the foam, initially posed a challenge. Its high density made it unsuitable for furniture production—one of our early ideas. However, we found a breakthrough when we connected with Matras Recycling Europe. Through technical validation, they confirmed that the foam could, in fact, be recycled in a sustainable manner.

Meanwhile, we searched for a new purpose for the PVC fabric. UNBEGUN Amsterdam, renowned for their stylish upcycled products, enthusiastically rose to the challenge of repurposing this material. Their innovative approach transforms discarded fabric into fashionable, functional items, giving new life to what was once deemed waste.

Collaboration proved to be the backbone of the project. Bringing together climbing gyms, recycling specialists, and creative upcyclers brought diverse ideas and perspectives to the table. Together, we co-created a vision for a circular chain that can transform waste into resources.

A $4.5 Trillion opportunity

This initiative reflects a broader movement toward circular economies, where waste is seen as a resource. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation suggests that transitioning to a circular economy could yield up to $4.5 trillion in economic benefits by 2030. In the sports sector—where equipment turnover is high—the potential for sustainable innovation is enormous.

Our journey explores how climbing gym mats can be given a second life instead of becoming waste. We have identified opportunities to turn this challenge into a more sustainable approach. By engaging with various stakeholders and testing creative solutions, we are working towards a circular system that could reduce waste and enable material reuse. While this is still in the pilot phase, it highlights the potential for even complex waste streams to find new applications.
