In January we’ll be focussing on SDG 5: Gender Equality.

While some forms of discrimination against women and girls are diminishing, gender inequality continues to hold women back and deprives them of basic rights and opportunities. SDG 5 is about achieving gender quality and empowering all women and girls around the world.

She Decides | Rebekka van Roemburg, Special Advisor | She Decides was created as an urgent response to US President Donald Trump’s reinstatement and dramatic expansion of the Global Gag Rule – also known as the Mexico City Policy – in January 2017. The rule prevents NGOs outside the US from receiving money from the US government if they provide safe abortions or information about abortion, and has devastating effects on women, girls and their communities around the world. She Decides is a movement to counter the infringement on women’s right to decide about their bodies – wherever that may occur. #KnowedgeSharing

Equileap | Heather Larson, Research Analyst | Equileapis a social enterprise aiming to accelerate progress towards gender equality in the workplace, using the power of investments, grants and knowledge. Headquartered in Amsterdam and London, the organisation’s profits are used to support women through social impact projects that tackle the root causes of gender inequality. Equileap believes financial empowerment and involvement in companies’ strategy and vision can provide women with the tools to improve other aspects of their lives. #Action #Inspiration

She Matters | Christina Moreno, Founder & CEO | She Matters is a social enterprise and recruitment agency with a mission to empower female newcomers to enter the labour market, as well as local employers who are looking for talented and skilled workers. Through their gender-specific programming, they offer them the support they need to build their social and economic capital, boost their self-confidence and become leaders in their homes, businesses and communities. #Action #Inspiration

➜ You! | The event will continue with an interactive process facilitated by C-Change‘s Partnership Lead, Josephine Damstra. During this part of the event, together we will brainstorm about various issues relating to gender equality, generate new insights for overcoming such challenges and aim to find new ways to accelerate solutions around SDG5.

What is SDG Meetup?

Sustainable Development Goals Meetup is a monthly meetup powered by SDG House Residents Impact Hub Amsterdam and C-Change.

The SDG Meetup series provides a continuous engagement opportunity to accelerate solutions per SDG and develop shared knowledge and resources. It is also an accessible collaboration platform for established organisations, impact entrepreneurs, SMEs, institutions and independent professionals who want to learn about and work on the SDGs in an entrepreneurial way.

Each edition focuses on one SDG (i.e. gender equality, climate change). It is an interactive evening event meant to generate new ideas, connections, collaboration and action. At each edition we invite knowledge partners, entrepreneurs, innovators and expert facilitators to co-create an inspiring environment for us.

The learnings and insights of each meetup are shared with larger public through a blog series.

You can also join the SDG Meetup group on Meetup’s platform!
